The problem that some encounter with the M-1917 is when they were re-barreled post WW1. The steel and heat treat issue was corrected for the British P-14 and US M-1917 rifles. I'd love to find a correct early M-1903 and I would have no problem shooting it with mild handloads. Even if so, I think it's doubtful using M-2 ball ammo you will blow it up. Some of the low SN number 1903s had heat treat issues due to the type of steel used for the receivers and heat treat process, your chance of finding one of these is slim.
